Cumberland hit-and-run accident kills one

Eighteen-year-old Cumberland, Rhode Island resident Carl John III lost his life after he was hit by a white sport utility vehicle at around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, May 2 while walking with a friend along Bear Hill Road in Cumberland.

Police officials reported that John had been able to receive medical attention at Rhode Island Hospital after the vehicular accident, but that he succumbed to his mortal injuries a day after being  admitted on Tuesday, May 3.

Witnesses stated that the driver of the SUV that struck John left the scene of the accident after the crash.

However on Tuesday, the driver, identified as 29-year-old Stoughton, Massachusetts resident Laura Belhumeur, turned herself in to police officials investigating the case accompanied by her lawyer. Belhumeur was charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury.

Belhumeur’s bail was set by the district court judge at $10,000 personal recognizance and has scheduled a pretrial conference for July 7.
