A local first grader recently showed us that heroes come in all sizes. Seven-year-old Sameer Santana, a student in North Providence, completely changed the day for his school and community through his quick thinking. He did not wait for someone else to step in when a dangerous situation unfolded right in front of him. Instead, he took immediate action to protect a friend.
A First Grader Springs Into Action
During a normal school day, a frightening emergency occurred in the cafeteria. Sameer’s friend began to choke on an apple slice. Choking hazards are incredibly dangerous, and every single second counts.
The classroom teacher quickly ordered the students to remain in their seats so the adults could handle the situation. Most children would naturally sit still and wait. Sameer, however, noticed his friend needed help right away. He ran over to his choking classmate and successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver. His quick actions cleared his friend’s airway and saved a life.
Sameer’s mother expressed immense pride when she learned about her son’s bravery. She noted that the school secretary contacted her to share the news and extend a special reward. Like any parent, she felt completely shocked but deeply grateful for her son’s instincts.
Ronald Resmini Recognizes Local Bravery
When attorney Ronald Resmini heard about Sameer’s heroic actions, he immediately wanted to recognize the young boy. Our community thrives when neighbors look out for one another, and Sameer set a wonderful example for everyone.
